Conflagration
On
a warm spring day in April 1734, a fire raged through Montreal’s merchant
quarters. When the flames finally died, 46 buildings – including the Hôtel-Dieu
convent and hospital – had been destroyed. Within hours, rumors ran rampant
that Marie-Joseph Angélique, a Black slave fighting for her freedom, had
started the fire with her white lover, Claude Thibault. Less than 24 hours
later, Angelique was sitting in a prison cell. Her lover was nowhere to be
found. More than 20 witnesses appeared before the judge, all claiming Angélique
was the arsonist. But no one saw her set the fire.
It didn’t matter. In an era when
lawyers were banned from practising in New France, Angélique was on her own. She
denied starting the fire. Philippe Archambeau, a court clerk assigned specifically to document her case, believed Angelique
might just be telling the truth. That belief only got stronger after Angélique was
tortured – and finally confessed. Her captors used the brodequins to crush
Angélique’s leg. Her spirit remained indomitable.
As
Angélique was paraded through the streets of Montreal, Incendiare embroidered
across the front of her white chemise, Archambeau finally realized what really
happened the night Montreal burned to the ground.

Western Justice
.
When human remains are found at the Vore Buffalo Jump, the short-staffed local sheriff’s department requests assistance from Park Service Investigators Doug and Jill Fletcher. ATV tracks lead the investigators to the victim’s boots and a hunting blind constructed on the edge of the Black Hills National Forest. With more questions than answers the Fletchers find themselves pulled into the community dynamics of tiny Aladdin (population 15) where the café and general store are the hub of information for the county
The surprising identification of the victim only opens more questions about him, and his connection to the location of his murder. When the Fletchers follow up on the few leads provided by John Doe’s identification, they unwittingly open a can of worms.

A Troubled Heart
Unsure of his
real past or name, Finn O’Connor thinks he was born in Ireland and taken from his
mother as a baby by a gypsy woman. As a toddler, an English woman then took him
to London. About ten he fled to join a gang of boys who survived by their wits on
the streets. Five years later, he was arrested for a minor crime and transported
to The Colony of New South Wales for a 10-year term. In 1846 as transporting of
criminals neared an end in NSW, he was moved to the infamous penitentiary at
Port Arthur in Van Diemen’s Land.
On the day Finn received
his papers of freedom an accidental meeting brought him into contact with 20-year-old
Esther Blythe. Born in Surrey, England, genteel Esther is kind and caring. As a
4-year-old her parents brought her to Van Diemen’s Land where her Papa, a
doctor, took on the task of providing medical aid to the prisoners at the Port
Arthur penitentiary and its surrounding area. Sadly, both parents were killed
in an accident, leaving Esther with no option but to work as a governess/nursemaid.
For reasons that
even she did not comprehend, Esther took ex-convict Finn under her wing when
they met outside the penitentiary hospital. Could be she saw a fellow lonely
soul who simply wanted someone to have faith in him. Life seems to take a turn
for perhaps the better from then on, but will these two lonely people overcome many
obstacles to find the happiness they seek together as they face an uncertain
future.
