February is almost over,
and ‘Valentine’s Day’ has passed. I hope you got chocolates or maybe a dinner
out. Or the best Valentine’s gift, a book. Regardless, it is a nice way to
break up winter.
In the news, not
everything is rosy. That’s why these events, however small, are important to
our well-being.
I have travelled to 45 or
50 countries. I’m not sure exactly how many. One day, I’ll get a world map out
and stick pins in all the places I’ve been. I do realize how lucky I’ve been.
Some of the places I visited, I wouldn’t go to now. But we don’t have to. You
can sit cuddled up in your chair with your favourite beverage and travel via a
book. The Suspects takes you on a Nordic journey ending in Moscow.
Mable
Havelock and Violet Ficher are on a scenic bus tour of the Nordic capital
cities of Europe and Russia. The tour culminates in Moscow. Where The tour
director is murdered. There is a busload of suspects to choose from. A
flirtatious woman and her jealous husband. A professor of Nordic History who is
ill-informed. Two world travellers who describe themselves as gypsies and a
mysterious man who is hiding something. The tour director’s assistant and bus
driver both have an axe to grind against the tour director, Hilda Karlson.
Add
to the mix smugglers and thieves. And a case of mistaken identity. But
unfortunately, the prime suspect is Mabel. Mabel and Violet will have to use
all their skills and ingenuity to solve the murder in Moscow. And prove Mabel’s
innocence to the Russian police.
Prologue Moscow
Mabel bit her lip as she looked at the white, waxy face of
the dead woman lying on the bed. The life force that was Hilda drained away,
her eyes wide open, sunk back into her skull, jaw slackened, and lips pale.
“Come on, we have to get the hell out of here.”
“Shouldn’t we look for clues first?” asked Violet.
“Clues, what clues? We just erased them.”
“But don’t you want to find out who killed Hilda?”
“We’re in a foreign
country.” Mabel started for the door.
“That never stopped you before.”
“This time, we are in big trouble.”
“Why? We didn’t do anything wrong.” Violet insisted.
Mabel paused, grim-faced. She looked back at the dead woman.
“Really! We haven’t done anything wrong? We moved a dead body and interfered in
a crime scene.
I remember this book. Enjoyed
