You just need a garden and a library!

 What a special time of year for people who love fresh veggies. July and August are the prime months for harvesting vegetables from our garden. This is the time of the year when we get paid back for all that hard labor in planting and nurturing those lovely plants. 

We are reaping the rewards now.

Not only does gardening provide rewards of fresh, healthy food, but the labor also is more satisfying than going to a stinky dark gym to exercise. Planting, digging and weeding the plot is one of the best ways to keep a happy, strong heart.

Warning!! It's zucchini time. Zucchini is a prolific plant. Once it gets growing, the harvesting goes on and on and on. You'll need several recipes to have some diversity in your diet.
I'll share a zucchini cake recipe at the end of the article.


Green tomatoes. Fingers crossed we'll have a long enough season for the tomatoes to ripen.
We had a late spring. The weather was so cold and rainy, Gardener Ted thought he would never get any crops from our garden. Unfortunately, many seeds rotted in the cold ground and had to be replanted. The good news is the sun finally came out and warmed up the ground so the beans are flowering and looking healthy today! We may pick a handful by the end of the week.

I picked my first green pepper this week. I love, love, love green peppers. You too?

The potato plants are blooming. They show promise of producing tasty spuds.

Lettuce on the left. Romaine and Magenta. We have had to give lots of lettuce away to friends and family and to the local food pantry. What a rewarding experience when people smile when we hand them the fresh lettuce. Nothing like it.
I've made two batches of slaw from crisp heads of cabbage. Nothing like the sound of the crack of a head of cabbage when you split it with a sharp knife. I cut the head in halves or quarters, cut out the core, then soak it in salt water for about 15 minutes.
The salt kills any insects hiding within the layers of leaves.

I know, the black-eyed Susans are not veggies, but oh so pretty.

In my scary story, Terror on Sunshine Boulevard, the main characters are Gloria and Jim Hart from Michigan. They spend winters in a retirement community in Florida. Jim is a year-round gardener with a garden Up North and one in Florida. He grows waaaaay too many vegetables so they give them away to friends and family. Gloria is always searching for delicious ways to cook vegetables so she has a choice of dishes for their dinner table. 

Hmmm...these characters are suspiciously similar to the author and her husband. LOL...Yes, I based them on my life, but Jim and Gloria are a bit more fun and quirkier than we are!

Since I can't pass a zucchini through the Internet to you, I will share a great recipe with you for Zucchini cake. 

ZUCCHINI CAKE
3 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
Sift together these dry ingredients into a bowl and set aside. (I don't use a sifter.)

3 c. sugar 
11/2 c. vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
3 c. shredded zucchini
1 c. chopped nuts
Beat together sugar, oil, vanilla, eggs and zucchini

Mix all ingredients together. Fold in nuts.
Spray 9 x 13-inch pan with oil--do you flour your pans?
Bake at 350 degrees C  for 1 hour
Cool in pan, then sprinkle with powdered sugar or frost with cream cheese icing
Mmmmm. Good.

TIP: Use 3/4 c. applesauce and 3/4 c. oil instead of 1 1/2 c. oil to reduce fat

Spring-time Gardening Mohan Ashtakala

 



    Many of us are long-time gardeners. Some, looking at the rising cost of vegetables, have decided, for the first time, to venture into this rewarding pastime. Here are a few tips for first-timers:

 

1.          Know your geography: It is of paramount importance to know your growing season, which varies by altitude and latitude. A growing season is calculated as the date between the last frost in spring till the first frost in fall. Do not plant outside the growing season.

 

2.          Choose a site: The ideal site for a garden should receive at least six hours of sunlight per day, have adequate drainage (as rain is common in the spring) and can be watered easily.

 

3.        Prepare the bed: About a month before planting, clean the garden area of old leaves and dead branches. With a spade, turn the topsoil over. Soil rotation breaks lumps of hard dirt, allows for aeration and brings nutrients deep into the soil.

 

4.          Indoor germination: Many plants require indoor germination, depending on the species. They need to be germinated indoors, before being transplanted at the appropriate time. To determine which seeds require this treatment, please look on the seed labels, or do an on-line search. Typically, paper-cups, yogurt containers and ice-cube trays make excellent starters.

 

5.          Wait for the soil to dry: One mistake to avoid is the transplanting of seedlings when the garden is too wet. Pick up a large handful of dirt and roll it into a ball. If the ball crumbles when pressed with your fingers, or shatters when dropped a distance of three feet, the soil is dry enough for transplanting.

 

6.      Choose the correct seeds: Here are some of the best vegetables to grow in the springtime: Peas, Spinach, Lettuce, Radish, Beet, Potato, Tomato, Cucumbers, Rhubarb are all planted at this time of the year. The correct seeds to plant depends on the growing season and the site’s properties.

Hello and Welcome to our garden! This time of year is when we really enjoy the harvest. Come on along with me and see Gardener Ted's (GT) garden.

My husband, Ted, is a farm boy. He has never lost that love of growing plants. In fact, because he built a small greenhouse on the back of our house way back in the '70s, moved away from our friends and family to purchase a floral shop and greenhouse operation in Michigan. 

My newest release from BWL Publishing, Arranging a Dream: A Memoir, is a feel-good story about the first year we were in the flower business in 1975-1976. What an adventure for us! We knew nothing about the floral industry or how to operate a business. 

Now in our retirement years, we are fortunate to have time to enjoy our passions--Ted's gardening and my writing.

Heavenly Hostas by A.M. Westerling

Hostas are some of my favourite perennials as they’re showy, easy to grow and like shaded spots. My hosta garden is on the south side of the house beneath an ornamental crab apple and they really seem to love it there. Which reinforces my mantra to find the plants that like the space you have – it makes you look like a gardening genius! Here's my shade garden during July a few years ago. I planted sweet woodruff and cranesbill geranium along with the hostas.


These plants are native to Korea, Japan and China where they are found in moist woodlands, along stream banks and rivers, and open grasslands. They’re also known as Plantain Lily, Funkia and Corfu Lily. Their known use as a garden plant, food, medicinal herb and a source of aromatics goes back to the Han Dynasty. A Chinese legend has it that a goddess dropped her hairpin from which grew the beautiful hosta and often the decorative part of a woman’s hairpin is made from jade shaped similarly to the unopened flower.

The first hostas appeared on the European continent in the 1780s and at that time were grown under glass for its tropical attributes.

They’re hardy and long lived and although I have mine in a bed, they also do well in containers and rock gardens. They come in a variety of sizes, colors and textures and usually have a spread and height of between 1 and 3 feet. While they’re mostly known for their lovely foliage, the plants also produce lovely spikes of flowers in shades of pink, white, light blue and lavender. Hummingbirds and bees really love hosta flowers. You can see the hosta flowers in behind the pink geraniums:



Hostas do best in dappled or deep shade because of their large leaves but they can take the heat of full sun if they’re kept in moist, fertile soil. Snails, slugs, rabbits and deer like hostas so keep an eye out for those pests.

Plant potted hostas any time but probably best in the spring. Put them at the same soil level as in the pot and water until the soil is moist. I use 20 20 20 fertilizer after planting and also when new growth comes in the spring. My hosta bed has automatic sprinklers so they get a shower every morning around 5 am which keeps the soil nice and moist. You can pinch the flower stalks to encourage new growth however I never bother. Maybe that’s something I should try this year!

It’s best to transplant and divide in the early spring when the leaves just start to poke through the crown. They don’t usually need dividing, however, because they will simply grow less quickly if they have less space. They are slow growers and may take two to four years to reach their full size. Below you can see the hostas poking up through the petals of the ornamental crab, in late May, and below that, the hostas in late July.





Young hosta leaves are edible, with a flavor similar to lettuce and asparagus. In Japan, they’re known as urui and are boiled, fried in tempura or eaten raw. If you want to try this, boil them for about 20 seconds until the leaves are bright green. They’re sometimes included in salads to add texture more than flavor. The flowers are said to have anticancer properties and are also edible with a peppery flavor. The essential oils obtained from the leaves are used in perfume.

Geraniums are a Gardener's Best Friend by A.M. Westerling

 


 

Geraniums are one of my favourite summer annuals. They’re easy to grow, are drought resistant, come in a multitude of colours and over winter very well. They’re happy wherever I put them, either in full sun or part shade, plus they also like to grow in pots which is important here on the Prairies. We get hail storms every summer, so my husband and I regularly engage in “The Running of the Pots” ie When a storm threatens, we bring all our potted annuals under cover to avoid the damage from hail stones.

 


What we call geraniums were brought from South Africa to Europe by Dutch traders in the early 18th century. Although originally classified as geraniums due to their similarity to hardy wild geraniums growing in Europe, they were eventually reclassified as Pelargonium due to differences in the petal shape and number of stamens from the wild variety. Pelargonium means stork’s bill, a reference to the long, sharply pointed shape of their seedpod. True geraniums are a hardy flowering perennial also know as “cranesbill”. I have a patch of cranesbill in my side garden and yes, I can attest to the fact they’re very hardy! In the picture below you can see one of my overwintered geraniums. The flowering plant behind it is cranesbill.




The name stuck however, so when we say geranium, we actually mean pelargonium. There are two common varieties, Zonal Geraniums and Ivy Leaf Geraniums which are a trailing variety. I’ve grown both successfully although I’ve never been able to overwinter the ivy variety despite repeated attempts. Those are ivy geraniums in the wall pots in the picture below. 




 I use a good quality planter box mix in my pots and feed the geraniums with 20 20 20 fertilizer every couple of weeks. I dead head regularly to keep the plant flowering and pinch back leggy stems to promote bushiness. On very hot days, I’ll water daily otherwise I’ll let the soil dry out a bit.

To overwinter, bring your geraniums inside before the first frost. I must admit, however, that I’ve been caught flat footed a couple of times over the years and my geraniums were hit by frost. It didn’t kill them as the roots didn’t freeze but I made sure I had new growth before I let them go dormant.

They do best when given a dormant period through the winter months so use less water and don’t fertilize. I water every two weeks so the roots don’t dry out completely. By the end of the winter, they’re looking pretty sad but that’s when I shape them and remove all the dead growth. I’ll start watering them in April. After a few waterings, I’ll start to fertilize. Of course, I harden them off before leaving them out for the summer. They can be repotted in the spring to encourage new growth although I usually don’t bother. This is how they look when I bring them out in the spring:




 But within a month or two they've grown in nicely. 



Some interesting geranium facts:

Keep the plants out of reach from pets and young children as they may cause indigestion and vomiting. They’re toxic to Japanese beetles so that’s one pest you don’t have to worry about although in my experience, geraniums are resistant to pretty much anything.

Apply crushed geranium leaves to stop the bleeding of minor cuts. In some aromatic varieties, both the flowers and leaves are edible and fresh leaves of all types can be used for flavouring jelly, iced drinks, pastries, pound cake and salads. Dried leaves can be used in potpourri and sachets.

In the language of flowers, scarlet geranium means silliness. Ha, I’ve had quite a few silly geraniums over the years!

Gardens and Gardening

My interest in gardening and history extends to Garden History and the effect of changes in climate over the years.
I am reading A little History of British Gardening by Jenny Uglow.
It begins with a mention of the Iron Age in the first Chapter: 'Did the Romans Have Rakes" and is a mine of information. Ms Uglow describes gardens large and small, the plants and the gardeners. She writes: "I wish there were medieval monastic gardens for us to visit, to wander from the cloister to the orchard, the infirmary to the fishponds, the paradise where flowers were grown to the rows of kale and leeks. But even if we cannot visit them, we know that the monks and nuns enjoyed their gardens.
At Winchester the clerk of works had a private garden called 'La Joye'. And in 1108, on the day that he died, the ailing archbishop of York walked in his garden to breathe the air and the scent of flowers.'
Every time I go into my private, organic garden I appreciate the legacy of fresh air and the scent of flowers also enjoyed so long ago by the archbishop.
Self-isolated due to the corona virus, the pleasure growing my own herbs, soft fruit, stone fruit, vegetables and ornamental threes shrubs and flowers is more important than it has ever been.
Sitting outside on a pleasant day listening to birdsong, watching birds drinking from my tiny pond and seeing the cheeky squirrels fills me with peace and a sense of well-being.
